Jay & Demetrius
Several years ago, Jay Steimitz and several other men from our church began coaching the Park Heights Saints football team in a vastly under-resourced neighborhood in West Baltimore. Demetrius was a middle school student and one of the players. Jay and Demetrius became “good friends,” even though on paper, it might look like they don’t have much in common.
One day, Demetrius asked Jay to bring him to church. Since that day, nearly every Sunday, Jay has driven to West Baltimore, picked up Demetrius and brought him to church. They participated in Wildfire and now participate in Venture, going on every trip, retreat and activity. Demetrius says Grace has become like another home to him and has developed a strong faith. Before becoming friends with Jay and getting involved at Grace, Demetrius used to continually get into fights and scuffles. He was shy and uncomfortable around people. Now, in his own words, he has “come a long way.” He says, “The old me is gone and God has brought out a new, better me!”
There were many seeds sown to bring this fruit: the seeds sown by Jay’s sacrificial spirit of driving Demetrius to church week after week; the seeds of faith and generosity by so many who have supported Grace so that we even have a Student Ministry; the seeds of service by the Student Ministries volunteer and staff team; and more! Seeds of Grace producing a harvest of righteousness, hope and redemption in Demetrius’ and Jay’s lives
