Connecting Families of All Needs

From the start of the pandemic and beyond, Grace Kids has always ensured that no family gets left behind. Right away, the Next Gen team we’re working on ways to make “online church” engaging for children and youth.

Connecting Families of All Needs

Grace Kids Zoom calls were developed as a result of the pandemic and a dynamic way to not only maintain the kids’ connections with their friends and volunteer leaders, but a rare opportunity for parents and caregivers to catch a glimpse of the purpose-filled fun their children have each week at Grace.

This careful attention to the families' varying comfort levels carried into the transition of meeting once again in person. Aly Huggins, the Grace Kids Coordinator, recalled something Pastor Shea said frequently throughout the pandemic: “we’re not ‘re-opening,’ we’ve always been open.” With the same care and attention that was put into the virtual kids’ gatherings, the Next Gen team and crucial crew of volunteers made sure that no caregiver or child was uncomfortable as they made the transition to meeting in person.

For all of us as parents, since the beginning of the pandemic, whenever you would go out with your kids...it would be difficult and nerve-racking to get your kids to put on their masks and keep them on. But [during the transition to meeting in person] no kids were having trouble keeping their masks on. They wanted to be here and had no trouble social distancing.

Due to the deeply connected partnership between Next Gen and Grace Disabilities, families of kids with special needs can be confident that every member of the family is thriving while they’re at church. Grace Kids works closely with the Buddy Ministry under the Disabilities Ministry, which provides a “plethora of resources and ideas for families with kids with special needs to help them have a spiritual journey,” according to Aly.

As someone who has a son with Down Syndrome, Aly deeply understood the value of supporting every child’s needs. “With my son being nonverbal and having a specific set of needs, he has a talker device which is like an iPad that will talk for him.” The Buddy Ministry partners with parents in finding out what each child needs. Aly further explained the process: “they ask questions like, ‘What do you want to see for him?’ and ‘How can we support him?’ specifically related to his communication skills now that he has his talker device. His buddy, Laney, who’s also a high school student, is learning how to use his talker so that she can help him use it.” Aly knows firsthand the blessing a parent feels when they know their child is being loved, cared for, and supported in their faith. When children, no matter the extent of their needs, are nourished like this, the impact on the entire household is tangibly felt. This is one of the many ways Grace Kids is being used by God to make significant changes in the Baltimore community and beyond.
